KwaZulu-Natal has always been known for its exceptional natural beauty. From beaches to wildlife and beyond, there’s so much to love about the outdoors in the place that we call home. In honour of Earth Day on 22 April, we thought we’d share some cool things and places that epitomise nature on the North Coast of KZN.
iSimangaliso Wetland Park
Not only is it a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it’s also one of the brightest jewels of the North Coast. Home to a variety of ecosystems, it includes lakes, wetlands, coastal dunes, and forests. The park itself is famous for its rich biodiversity and is home to hippos, crocodiles, and a wide range of bird species, to name only a few, making it a must for a visit.
Sodwana Bay
Known for its incredible coral reefs, Sodwana Bay is a paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers alike, offering the chance to see vibrant coral formations and a world of vibrant marine life, including colourful fish, turtles, and even dolphins.
The Humpback Whale Migration
Every year, humpback whales migrate along the North Coast of KZN, making it one of the best times for whale watching. From June to November, these majestic creatures can be spotted breaching and playing in the waters. If you’ve ever gotten to see this unfold in real-time, you’ll know just how special it is. On the subject of playful mammals leaping in and out of our oceans, there’s a reason why we’re known as the Dolphin Coast! Sightings of dolphins along our shores are always a high possibility, with bottlenose dolphins being particularly common here.
Mangrove Forests
The North Coast is also home to several mangrove forests. These crucial ecosystems provide habitats for numerous species of fish, birds, and other wildlife. They also help protect coastlines from erosion and serve as nurseries for many marine species. A visit to one of these mangrove forests is almost other-worldly and we’re always blown away at what we get to see in them
Convenient living
When you live on the North Coast, you’re never far from what you need. From schools to hospitals, shopping malls, entertainment and more, the North Coast allows you to enjoy laidback living alongside the amenities that make daily living an absolute joy.
Coastal Birdlife
Birding enthusiasts, you’re in luck. The North Coast is a haven for birders with a wide variety of coastal and wetland bird species calling our backyard home. From flamingos and herons to eagles and kingfishers, the region offers some fantastic opportunities for birdwatching, many of which unfold right at home in the garden!
